Bottin (Guglielmo Bottin, 1977) is producer, dj and sound designer based in Venice, Italy Bottin makes music only an Italian can make… probably Take a youth spent against a background of old Italian Giallo soundtracks, add in late 70s Italian disco influences, a touch of free and easy west-coast vibe and a smattering of kitsch. That just about half describes Bottin.
 
Early works include two albums (Chill Reception in 2002 and I Love Me Vol. I in 2004), Later he started working as producer and remixes for major Italian pop artists like Lucio Dalla, Donatella Rettore, Sergio Caputo and Spanish group Chambao.
 
As sound artist he was selected for Fabrica, the Benetton creative research center founded by Oliviero Toscani. For Colors Magazine he curated the Color Music series, presented at the Sonar festival in Barcelona. For the Biennale of Venice he designed audio for Spanish Pavilion.
 
Bottin’s seminal releases include “Fondamente Nove” on Eskimo Records (2008) and “No Static” for American label Italians Do It Better (2009). Bottin soon moved to the forefront of the contemporary disco scene with his concept album “Horror Disco” on Bearfunk Records UK, which garnered critical praise for its dashing display of all of Italo’s delights without the pastiche. The album’s title may conjure up images of a Goblin inspired trip through Dario Argento horror movie nostalgia, but in actuality it is filled with thick, Moroder-esque basslines that inspire dancing rather than dread. Horror Disco has sold out 2 cd editions and is currently been repressed in a double-LP special collector’s edition.
 
in 2010 Bottin is back on Eskimo Recordings with Galli/Piazza Venezia (produced together with Rodion) in which the signature italo-disco approach gradually blends into a housed-up dancefloor anthem. Shortly after, Nang Records releases “Discoursive Diversions”, a collection of remixes by Bottin for artists like Lindstrom, In Flagranti, Tosca and many more.
 
2011 saw the release of the Discocracy single on Eskimo Recordings (followed by the Discocracy Revisited remix EP) as well as Aztaro, a collaboration between Bottin, Justus Köhncke and Rusty Egan of Visage.
 
With an exhaustive touring schedule covering over 20 countries and 4 continents, from North America to Australia, Brazil to Hong Kong, from Europe’s best underground parties to cult events like We Love Space in Ibiza, Bottin’s reputation as both producer and DJ is a steadily growing force to be reckoned with. His sets are an unpredictable journey into space disco, italo rarities, and deep funk. A reckless blend of retro-futuristic sounds and contemporary electronica that always sets the dance floor on fire.

Melbourne promoters Darkbeat will celebrate their 10th anniversary with a three-disc compilation this May.
 
The party has long been a techno and house institution in Victoria, hosting acts like Sven Väth, Sasha, Derrick Carter and James Zabiela. Now the company are venturing into the record business, launching Darkbeat Recordings with a triple mix album. Each of the three discs will be mixed by one Melbourne jock, including local staple Anthony Pappa, Darkbeat founder Daniel Banko AKA Rollin Connection and long-standing resident Phil K. The label’s prime focus will be a series of Darkbeat branded compilations, but artist releases will also be on the agenda.

Several years ago, before digital media became the norm, I remember being handed a mixtape by one of my friends. It was a collection of house and techno delights from various artists, and at the time I didn’t know the names of any of the tracks or their producers but, as time went on I discovered some of them. Among the many gems on the mixtape was a track by Metro Area – as always, as soon I discovered the duo (Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani) I delved into their back catalogue and unearthed one fantastic track after another. Metro Area are renowned throughout the music world for their classic take on electronic music, full of soul and funk – music that really gets you dancing. Their influence is widespread and they have universal respect from within the electronic music community. Ahead of their first live performance in over a decade, I was fortunate enough to be able to ask both men some questions…
 
You guys grew up in New Jersey and New York… What effect would you say your hometown has had on your musical direction?
 
Darshan: Of course, I didn’t realize it when I was a kid, but I think we definitely benefited from certain influences and values growing up in the general vicinity of New York. Morgan’s hometown is about 30-40 minutes from Manhattan on the New Jersey side of the Hudson, and I come from a town about an hour north of the Bronx, between New York and Woodstock. This whole area has a pretty great cultural history.

Morgan: We both grew up in truly suburban environments, meaning we were outside of the city but still within reach and therefore affected by it. We were influenced heavily by its radio stations (KISS-FM etc..) and culture.
 
What kind of stuff were you into when you first discovered your love for music?
 
Darshan: Like so many other kids, I started with my Dad’s records and tapes. It was a mixture of stuff – mostly 60s and 70s rock. Simon & Garfunkel, Carole King, Lata Mangeshkar, John Lennon & Plastic Ono Band’s “Sometime in New York City” album, which was slept-on at the time, but is now kind of a cult classic, co-produced by Phil Spector. Though I have to say, I had just as much fun looking at and reading the cover art as I did listening.
 
MG: I can’t remember not being into music. My older siblings had a major effect on me. Devo was huge for me as a little kid. You could listen to it as a child or an as adult. I could bounce around to simple lyrics and melodies but knew there was something naughty going on that I didn’t understand yet. I listen now as an adult and it’s pretty subversive stuff.
 
Who were your inspirations within rock music?
 
Darshan: By the time I had any sense of inspiration from rock it was probably 1979 or 1980. So I was into radio stuff like Foreigner, AC/DC, Toto, bands like that. I heard “Tom Sawyer” by Rush in my cousin’s car and the synthesizer sounds blew my mind. I liked Ozzy Osbourne when I was like 8 or 9, being too young to really know about the much cooler Black Sabbath stuff.
 
MG: One of the first songs I got into as a baby – and I’m not kidding, I used to mosh around to it – was “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple. It was released the year I was born. The production of classic rock is amazing… that kind of dead room disco sound, but more expensive. Later I got into prog rock, that my brother listened to, like Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Rush… Stuff like that.

Radio Slave has mixed the 23rd instalment of the Balance series.
 
Matt Edwards follows the likes of Nic Fanciulli, Deetron and, most recently, Funk D’Void, in mixing an edition of the Australian series. The Rekids chief has released a handful of commercial mixes over the years, most notably fabric 48 back in 2009. The first half of two-disc package has a decidedly housey tracklist, with cuts from Delano Smith, Nina Kraviz, DJ Bone and Larry Heard among others. The second disc is a more laidback affair, with Ryuchi Sakamoto, Herbie Hancock and J Dilla all featuring. Edwards’s own productions (as Radio Slave, The Machine and one half of Quiet Village project with Joel Martin) are sprinkled across both CDs.
 
“The idea of a double disc [mix] is something that totally suits me down to the ground,” he says. “I’m interested in so many types of music. So with the Balance compilation I knew I’d have to take one mix in a clubbier direction and then the second disc would be all about showcasing tracks from my favourite producers and creating an environment for home listening that isn’t just wallpaper.”

Session Victim kennt jeder aller spätestens seit “Good Intentions” – einem der Hits 2012.
Daniele Baldelli kennen die meisten vermutlich noch nicht. Und das liegt daran, dass Daniele Baldelli schon ein DJ Star war bevor die meisten von uns überhaupt in Planung waren. In den frühen 70ern begann er aufzulegen berühmt wurde er aber für seine Zeit als Resident im legendären Cosmic-Club. In unendlich langen DJ-Sets brachte er das Publikum um den Verstand. Welcher DJ würde es sich heute noch trauen eine extra lange Disco Version vom Bolero zu spielen und das mit LedZepplin oder noch merkwürdigeren Sachen zu mixen. In seinen Sets spielte er Dub Reggae auf 45 oder extraschnelle Discoplatten auf 33. Genregrenzen gibt es bei Baldelli nicht stattdessen wurde alles was er spielt zu einem eigenen Genre: Cosmic Disco.
 
Wir sind sehr stolz den “europäischen David Mancuso” bei uns zu haben. Expect everything.

A whole evening of contemporary dance which has been set up by three different choreographers is in need of three different sound producers. That’s the set-up of “MASSE“, the sound underlying the gesamtkunstwerk. “MASSE“ as a whole event has been triggered by renowned state ensemble Staatsballett Berlin and Club Berghain right in the centre of the german capital. Plus there’s even more to it: The Staatsballett and Berghain access new territory by staging “MASSE“ at the huge “Halle am Berghain“, a former combined heat and power station besides the club. The painter Norbert Bisky has been chosen to create the stage design. At the core of the dance night lies a tryptichon made out of pure sound: the music of Henrik Schwarz, Dettmann | Wiedemann and DIN was taken as the starting point for developing the choreographies.
 
Henrik Schwarz – Balletsuite #1 – Masse
Henrik Schwarz opens his suite with “Unknown Touch”, a dense exposition made from acoustic guitars and pizzicati strings floating on an atmosphere. The subsequent tracks let the bass lines wander amongst throbbing electrified guitars, both characterized by their clearly structured arrangements.
 
Creating a narrative break a synthesizer cuts into the groovy moves of “But Then I’m Different”, accompanied by a sighing violin. To top things off in the final track of “Balletsuite #1 – Masse“ a dreamy and summing-up house piano is aired. The solo piano ends with a quiet closing sequence slowing down the keys more and more to a final nothing.
 
Dettmann | Wiedemann – Menuett
Marcel Dettmann & Frank Wiedemann are also close associates of the Ostgut Ton family and are in charge of the second part, “Menuett“. Theirs is a 25 minutes long sonic-tryptichon: “Accelerando“ sounds like two space observation centers having a chat, while “Martellato“ is juggling the filters until the polyrhythm somehow transform into a circling movement. A syncopated beat and some shrewd filters bring light into “Spiritoso” – like fundamental electronic research into sound.
 
DIN – EVOLVE
DIN are Efdemin (Phillip Sollmann) & Marcel Fengler who created this new alias for “MASSE“. Similar to Dettmann | Wiedemann, the Berlin musicians utilize ever new parts of their machine park to create musical abstractions. Out of the humming virginal cosmos of “Creation” & “Variation” mid-range bass drums take shape until they poke a rattling rhythm pattern. In a similar way “Oscillation” first takes a bath in the primeval soup until the drums of an unheard-of tribe are arranged by an invisible hand to engineer a gentle flowing movement. This progression becomes more delicate in “Division” & “Generation” until it unwinds at the stage of “Conclusion” to fade out as a nocturne, urban touch. Given the different aesthetics of the producers that built “MASSE“, it’s uncanny and a pleasure to hear how its music as a whole shapes a fine sonic entity.

“One of my favorite things about Unknown Mortal Orchestra is how their music exists in this weird place between stoned funk, pastoral folk and off-the-wall psych. It finds its way into everything they do—which is generally writing sun-dappled songs that sound pretty but are lyrically really heavy. It’s a fascinating, often heartbreaking contrast. So hearing the band go completely bonkers, covering Lindstrom’s instrumental “Rà-àkõ-st” with all the aplomb of a bunch of kids that just discovered a bag of weed and a pile of guitars in their dad’s garage is immensely satisfying, like peeking in on the best jam session that never existed.”

For the uninitiated, the premise of RA VS is simple: two respected and like-minded DJs are invited to play an extended back-to-back session. The series of tag-teams so far has delivered some unforgettable nights, and our latest selection is perhaps our most ambitious pairing yet, with Full Pupp chief Prins Thomas set to play alongside techno doyen Donato Dozzy. Their styles are contrasting yet complimentary. Dozzy’s considered approach lends his sets a deep and atmospheric quality, while Thomas is more of a party-rocker. Watching them find a middle ground promises to be a unique experience. The set will take place at our usual off-Sonar haunt, BeCool, on Saturday, June 15th.
 
On the same night we’ve got two of electronic music’s cult figures—Madteo and Vakula—locked in for solo DJ sets upstairs at BeCool. Madteo is known for mixing up vintage dollar bin gems with contemporary fare, while Vakula’s cinematic take on deep house has found a home on respected labels like Dekmantel and Firecracker.

The A sides Closing In with its broken funk predated a lot of convergence happening now between house and bass music. And last but not least, Stefan Goldmann provides a brand new, ultra-stripped down EDIT of the mesmerizing Read That Lips. Remastered by D+Ms Rashad from the original DAT source and cut to premium vinyl, they are finally available again in unprecedented quality.

Hot on the trail of the ‘Need Nothing’ EP which garnered support from the likes of Maya Jane Coles, Damian Lazarus and Guy Gerber, Luca Lozano returns to his own Klasse Recordings with ‘Sail On’ featuring Amirali, another taster for his forthcoming album ‘Life In Black And White’.
 
For ‘Sail On’ Lozano enlists the vocal talents of Crosstown Rebels´ brightest starlet Amirali who imparts his haunting falsetto while the dexterous producer weaves a series of soft piano chords, swiftly layered with a swinging drum pattern and sharp bass. Building slowly and steadily, Amirali´s vocal is teased into the mix before it takes centre stage, adding great impetus and depth to the track and reinforcing the murky aesthetic of Lozano´s production.
 
First up on remix duties we have Session Victim. The German duo turn in a foot stomping, high-tempo remix that makes full use of the piano chords and takes the original into unchartered territories. Their energetic and considered interpretation retains the tapered bass and crisp drum pattern and while Amirali´s subtle vocal rolls underneath, Session Victim add adulating synths and delicate delays that lift the mood for an early morning set.
 
Next up is Paolo Rocco who should be no stranger to the loyal army of Klasse followers having dropped an EP on the label last July. Paolo´s delicate, ethereal remix is beautifully executed with tiny, fragile drips of subdued sound rolling beneath a deep, drawn out bass that only draws focus to Amirali´s spooky pitched down vocals. This also adds to the ominous and chilling direction that Paolo so effortlessly steers.
 
Rounding off the package is another Luca Lozano original – a bass jackin´ house affair that’s typical Lozano and must be played loud in order to be fully appreciated. ‘Blanket Groove’ has got a distinct breakbeat feel to it with an emotive synth that underpins a metronomic drum loop. With a deep-set bass comes a series of glitchy, leftfield sonics that fill the spaces in between.
 
With the ‘Sail On’ EP, Luca Lozano once more demonstrates the ease with which he travels across the spectrum of music, taking pinches of inspiration from House, Techno, Hip Hop, Soul and thus asserting himself as an artist brimming with vision, confidence and ambition.

Live At Honen-In Temple was recorded at the titular holy site in Kyoto last year. The performance, arranged as part of Goldmann’s Villa Kamogawa residency in the city, took place in front of a tiny crowd “while daylight faded into the dark of night”. Goldmann’s set is a decidedly ambient affair, focusing on musique concréte, microtonal music and beatless soundscapes. The album promises a glut of previously unreleased material, alongside familiar friends like ‘Lunatic Fringe’.
 
“Instead of giving you short previews, I decided to upload long segments from the album so you get a better idea of the atmosphere, spirit and direction of this” – Stefan Goldmann.

Over the last few months, the main focus in the Rekids camp has been on Nina Kraviz and the remixing of her 2012 debut LP. Now it’s time for a change, and it’s head honcho Radio Slave’s turn to get in on the remix action, with his 2008 hit ‘Tantakatan’ getting a fresh makeover in the shape of Mr. G’s ‘Nightwatch Dub’ and Prins Thomas’ ‘Diskomiks’.
 
On the former, Mr. G powers up his MPC and delivers that signature analogue beat-driven sound, tweaking the parts and including extra ideas to truly make the track his own. Cranking up the tempo ever so slightly, Mr. G takes the track into darker territory and adds a sinister rumbling bass line with more than enough low-end energy to make your guts shake. Like all of Mr. G’s best tracks, his ‘Nightwatch Dub’ builds gradually, while never losing that trademark Mr. G groove. This one is going to set techno dance-floors alight.
 
On his ‘Diskomiks’, the prince of Norwegian ‘space-disco’ Prins Thomas opts for a more organic approach, re-creating the unmistakeable chord stabs of the original on an acoustic piano and utilising a traditional drum kit for that loose, laid-back groove that could only come from a live drummer. His track shimmers with white noise and reverb throughout, before treating us to a delightfully staccato synth bass that typifies the Scandinavian disco sound. Fans of his musical output won’t be disappointed.
 
Here we have two supremely talented artists tackling the same task from different perspectives, showing that a simple, strong idea can go in one of many directions, and allowing us to indulge our love for techno and disco at the same time!

What is your favorite piece of equipment to use in the studio & why?
 
I have a few favourites right now – the first one is my Oberheim SEM analog synth module, which just is such a beast. You can do any kind of sounds with it – be it then bass, leads or just nice percussion. It’s one of those analog synths, which makes your everyday studio work so much nicer. And my 2nd love is my E-MU SP-12 Drum Machine, which is a classic, and everybody probably knows. I usually like to mix samples from the computer and some analog drums, but the kicks and toms are usually always coming from the SP-12. It just raw as house music should be.
 
Give us some insight into your production process. How do you typically begin constructing a track?
 
Well, there’s so many ways… I might just jam on my modular system and have some crazy sequences going on which I record and cut up to a certain rough arrangement of say 16 or 32 bars. Then I start adding bass and keys, keeping a basic drum groove from a drum machine going on for the rhythm. After I have a feel for the main parts I usually reprogram my beats to fit the vibe, or let’s say if I was using any loops in the beginning, I will reprogram them on the SP-12 or on my vintage samplers. I think it makes more sense than using these pre-programmed beats, which everyone uses. And many times I just fire up my Mbase or Machinedrum and keep banging the beats till they fit the groove and the song. Arrangement comes very naturally, sometimes a live jam takes control of the arrangement, sometimes you have to copy-paste your building blocks, or you have a vocal and then you work on a song basis. But I have to say a live jam is my preferred way of working. I lay all my channels on the desk and my summing device and then I just put Ableton into record mode and jam for 20 minutes recording everything, then it’s just time to cut up things and keep everything sorted so the arrangement works.
 
What piece of studio equipment or production process defines the Sasse sound?
 
Well first of all my years as a DJ has formed my way or working; towards the dance floor, but keeping an eye on the mind and soul as well. My sound has changed over the years, but I think it’s just an evolving process of learning how to do things right. You usually learn from mistakes right?
 
But what really defines my sound is the use of my analog mixer and summing combo and the recording and mix process in general – First of all I try to capture the sound in it’s natural glory, be it then a real instrument, a voice or a synth sound. I record everything into Pro Tools or Ableton and while recording I try to get a feel to the track and how the sounds should be sitting in the end mix as well. I do use samples and plug-ins as well, but most of those will be processed outside the computer with line-amps, through my vintage Yamaha mixer or through various effects or filters on my modular system. But that’s all technical stuff, and at the end of the day if you have a lovely song, which moves people emotionally, that’s the most important thing. I just try to put those small elements into a context, which works for me.

Greenspan’s best known for his Junior Boys works, but he’s not averse to popping out the occasional solo record or remix: he released the ‘Crown Princess’ 12″ on Dan Snaith’s Jiaolong label in 2012, and followed up with a tight edit of synth musician Laurie Speigel’s 1980 track ‘Drums’.
 
His latest edit sees him reconfigure Ghostly singer Lusine, responsible for this year’s The Waiting Room LP. His ‘Lucky’ remix begins as clean and light as sorbet, spotted with Zapp synth-wobbles and underscored by an Italo disco pulse. Things start to toughen up around the four minute mark, bringing Whitey’s vintage electro-trash smash ‘Leave Them All Behind’ springs to mind.
 
The Greenspan remix will feature on a 12″ release of Lusine’s ‘Lucky’, due on Ghostly in the coming months. The release will also include a remix from quondam Emerald Steve Hauschildt.

Stefan Goldmann hat zwei leere Vinyls produziert. Fast. “Ghost Hemiola” ist eine Doppel-12Inch mit Endlosrillen, jeweils 66 Stück. Es ist einerseits eine “skulpturale Revision” seiner Doppel-12Inch “The Grand Hemiola”, andererseits auch eine Anregung für jedermann diese Rillen selber zu gestalten, zu ritzen, wie z.B. mit einem Messer, um seinen ganz eigenen Sound zu kreieren. Neben dieser Art der Manipulation verändert sich die Platte auch mit Staub und der Abnutzung durch die Nadel selbst. Der Release von Stefan Goldmann ist also ein Stück Kunst zum selbst basteln.

After topping the Traxsource Techno charts for weeks with the original version of Dragonfly we bring you the remix pack from the Helsinki duo, Alex Nieminen and Heikki Liimatainen. The guys have been busy working on a remixes and a special collab with Robosonic for OFF Recordings and they are now locked in the studio to bring the follow up to Dragonfly.
 
In the meantime enjoy these remixes for Dragonfly. Sasse takes the dancer on a 15 minutes journey of dub techno mixed with his house roots, making a en epic dancefloor crusher which have created a havoc where ever it´s been dropped in the last months.
The Deux Tigres vs Erkka Remix takes an modern approach with skippy beats and a new bassline, chopping the arrangement to a frenzy, working the floor to a maxiumum with enough deepness.
 
Erkka Remix concentrates on melodies and a straighter flow, working the late hours to a fine peak.

Renaissance’s The Masters series tends to stick to big room hand-raisers, with Deep Dish, Hernán Cattáneo and James Zabiela all contributing previous instalments. Their latest mixer, though, is a more storied proposition. Francois Kevorkian came up in the early 1980s spinning in legendary spots like Studio 54 and The Paradise Garage. A slew of high profile releases and remixes followed, and he consolidated his hold on the NY house scene in the mid 1990s with the legendary Body & SOUL parties, run alongside Danny Krivit and Joe Claussell.
 
The 2xCD The Masters set features some familiar friends, including Objekt’s precision engineered ‘Porcupine’ and Blawan’s ’6 To 6 Lick’. A hitherto unheard track from Scuba will also feature. Tuff City Kids, Mike Huckaby, Trevino, Alden Tyrell, Factory Floor and A Made Up Sound all make the cut.
